Joseph Greenwell Obituary

Joseph Ignatius Greenwell III, 75, of Maysville, passed away Friday, January 17, 2020, at the Hospice of Hope Care Center in Maysville surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Maysville on February 29, 1944, he was the son of the late J.I. and Lillian Slattery Greenwell.

Joe graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1962 and attended Xavier University.  He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 1967, and served the Maysville Community as an Independent Pharmacist for 38 years.  He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of pharmacy in his role as Preceptor through the University of Kentucky, as well as serving on the Board of Directors for the Buffalo Trace District Health Department from 2002-2015.  Joe also served on the Board of St. Patrick’s School, where he served as Chairman.  He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Parrish Council and the Knights of Columbus.

Joe enjoyed golfing, going for walks, working meticulously in his yard, and spending time with family and friends.

On June 10, 1989, Joe received the gift of a kidney transplant.   It provided him many years of health and opportunities that he never took for granted.  He endured many obstacles during these last few years, but he faced them all with a determination and a level of faith that was inspiring to many.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy Porter Greenwell; his sons, Joey (Melissa) Greenwell of Maysville, and Kelly (Emily) Greenwell of Union, Kentucky; grandchildren Olivia, Aidan, Emily, Reece, and Quinn; siblings Betty Jean (Bill) Pulsipher of Clifton, VA, Anne (Scott) Poe of Maysville, Kathleen (Frank) Kane of Cincinnati, OH, and Martha (Chris) Saylor of Richmond, KY; and a host of friends, who all loved him dearly.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m., Monday, January 20, 2020, at St. Patrick’s Church by Father Andrew Young.

Joe will be laid to rest at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Maysville, Ky.

Pallbearers include Pat Gantley, Bill Germann, Jackie Thomas, Jerry Lundergan, Sonny Brammer, and Bert Sanders.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., Sunday, at St. Patrick’s Church.
