Anna Roberta "Bunkie" Hughes, of Flemingsburg, departed from this earth on Feb. 21, 2014 at Pioneer Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Flemingsburg.
She was born on October 28, 1926, in Carlisle, Kentucky, to the late Robert Emmanuel and the late Pansy Ruth Hughes.
Bunkie loved the arts, especially music and painting. She appreciated literature, science and architecture. She liked telling others about her adventures to Florida, New Orleans, Mexico, and Greece. Her family appreciated her cooking, especially Sunday and holiday dinners. She cared for many beloved pets during her lifetime. She attended New Creation Praise and Worship Center in Flemingsburg.
She graduated from Carlisle High School, where she sang in the choir and marched in the band as a majorette. For many years, she lived in Ewing where she helped on the family farm and cooked big meals when the workers came in from the fields. After moving to Lexington, she worked at Square D manufacturing plant, eventually retiring after 25 years of service.
She is survived by a daughter, Deborah (Dallas Swetnam) Thomas of Morehead; a son, Mark (Melinda) Thomas of Flemingsburg; three grandchildren, Gena Ann (Michael) Lunn, of Morehead, Chaeli Thomas (Steven) Glass of Flemingsburg, and Elijah Wesley Thomas of Los Angeles, CA; five great- grandchildren, Dalton Thomas Barbee of Morehead, Jerica Nicole Barbee of Flemingsburg, Michaela Dawn Barbee of Morehead, Quintin Lee Barbee of Morehead, and Jeremiah Scott Glass of Flemingsburg; three siblings, Bobby Hughes of Carlisle, Annette Flora of Carlisle, and Janette Gudgell of Carlisle.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Wesley "Wes" Thomas of Ewing; a brother, James Bruce Hughes of Louisville; and a sister-in-law, Josie Hughes of Carlisle.
A Celebration of Life will be held at New Creation Praise and Worship Center, Sunday, March 2, at 4:00pm. Visitation with family and friends will precede the Celebration of Life, on Sunday, March 2, at 3:00pm at New Creation Praise and Worship Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Maysville, Ky, 41056.
