Charles Herbert Hurst, 86, of Muses Mills, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, May 1, 2026.
Born in Muses Mill on October 11, 1939, his father was the late James Robert Hurst, and his mother was the late Effie Cooper Hurst.
Charles was a faithful member of the Muses Mills Christian Church. He had been in the grocery business since he was 16 years old. He owned and operated grocery stores for 49 years. He also enjoyed farming, but his passion was in the grocery business.
He is survived by his wife of 12 wonderful years, Geralene Thurman Hurst. Theirs was a true love story. He is also survived by his son, Chuck (Dena) Hurst of Muses Mills; his daughter, Sherri (Morris) Gardner of Beechburg, Ky.; his stepson, Randy (Angie) Meyer of Oak Ridge, Ky.; his three grandchildren, Kristy (Tyler) McDowell, Alison (Josh) Grannis, and Carrie (Kane) Basford; and his three great grandchildren, Gabe McDowell, Emma McDowell, and Laurie Basford. He is also survived by his sister, Loretta Rigdon of Muses Mills.
In addition to his mother Effie and his father Robert, Charles was preceded in death by his first love, Norma Ruth Hurst, to whom he was married for 54 years. Their marriage would serve as a model for any couple. Also preceding him in death was his grandson, Dwayne Hurst; his brother, James Robert Hurst Jr.; and his sister, Crystal Hurst.
The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2026, at the Muses Mills Church with Pastor Doug Reeves and Rev. Jim DeAtley officiating.
Charles will be laid to rest in the Muses Mills Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Chuck Hurst, Morris Gardner, Tyler McDowell, Gabe McDowell, Josh Grannis, Kane Basford, Jim Compton, Steve Newsome, and Jack Shields. Honorary pallbearers include Donnie Workman, Zack Hitch, Fred Crump, Robert Drake, and Jim Rigdon.
Visitation will be 12 noon, until the hour of service at 1 p.m., at the church located at 3735 Muses Mill Road in Wallingford, Ky.
