Obituary

Cray Shields, 85, of Flemingsburg, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022, at Pioneer Trace Nursing Home.  He was the widower of Dorothy Jean Willoughby Shields who passed away on Jan. 22, 1989.


Born in Fleming County on January 22, 1937, he was the son of the late Elmer Jack Shields and the late Phoebe McKenzie Shields.


Cray was a lifelong farmer.  He was a member of the Flemingsburg First Church of God and attended the New Vision Church of God.


Cray is survived by three of his children, Patricia Ramey and husband, Jackie of Carlisle, Barbara Mitchell of Georgetown, and Jeffrey Allen Shields and wife, Deana of May's Lick; his daughter-in-law, Carla Shields; his seven grandchildren, Jackie Ramey, Jr., Jason Ramey, Michelle Workman, Brian Mitchell, Corey Shields, Hannah Patterson, Sara Shields and Brittany Gillespie; his nine great-grandchildren, Jaye Workman, Gabby Ramey, Isabella Ramey, Alex Ramey, Joe Workman, Jenny Workman, Emma Shields, Isaiah Shields, and Hazel Patterson.  He is also survived by one of his siblings, Everett Shields of Pittsview, Alabama; along with many extended family members and friends.


In addition to his wife of 30 years Dorothy and his parents Elmer and Phoebe, Cray was preceded in death by his son, Mitch Shields; his daughter, Mary Louise Shields; his son, Randall Keith Shields; his grandson, Christopher Mitchell; and five of his siblings, Emma Robinson, Mabel and husband Venton Johnson, Margie Jolly, Elizabeth Peck, Mae and husband Clinton Johnson.


The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home with Bro. James Ray Hickerson and Sis. Judy Wallace officiating.


Cray will be laid to rest in Elizaville Cemetery.


Pallbearers include Corey Shields, Jackie Ramey, Jr., Jason Ramey, Richard Willoughby, Kent Corbin, and Scotty Dailey.  Honorary pallbearers include Charles Willoughby, Sid King, Charles "Sleepy" Adams, John Little, J. R. Boulden, and the late Tim Jessee.


Visitation will be 11 a.m., until the hour of service at 1 p.m., Wednesday, at Boone-Nickell.


All in attendance are strongly encouraged to wear face masks and to observe social distancing.
