Obituary

Derrick Scott Helphenstine, 36, of Ewing, Ky. passed away Monday, January 31, 2022, at UK Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington.


Born in Morehead, Ky. on June 15, 1985, he was the son of William "Will" Ball and Angie Helphenstine Harper.


Derrick worked for International Paper.  He was a graduate of Morehead State University (MSU) and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) Fraternity.  He was baptized at Southland Christian Church in Louisville and attended Thackers Chapel in Morehead.  Derrick was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He was a selfless person who always put the needs of others before his own.  An amazing son, brother, and friend, he was greatly loved by the family and children around him.  His presence touched many other lives and will continue to touch and inspire those he may never have known.


He is survived by his father, Will Ball and wife Christy; his mother, Angie Harper and Donnie Brewer; his siblings, Cassie (Shawn) Kitchen, Ronnie (Ashley) Harper, Jr., Carl (Alexis Tubbs) Harper, Ashley (Kendall) Trent, Haley (Tyler) Russell, Chelsie Ball, Kim Jent Cartee and his special brother, Darrin (Natalie) Pettit.  He is also survived by his maternal grandfather, Ronnie (Carolyn) Helphenstine; his paternal grandfather, Marcus (Shirley) Ball; his paternal grandmother, Glenna (Paul) Lewis; his two uncles, Darrin Helphenstine, Kevin Helphenstine; his three aunts, Anita (Wayne) Roberts, Amber Richards and Anita Back; his three great aunts, Debbie (Eddie) Emmons, Brenda (Larry) Buzzard and Nancy (Junie) Fearin; and his friends, Natasha Estep, Terry Dean, Greg & Lenora Tucker, David Weaver, Jerry & Amanda Carpenter, Brandon (Leslie Morgan) Hammonds, Danny & Denise Earlywine, and Dale Davis; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and many friends.


Derrick was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Joyce Helphenstine; his paternal great-grandparents, Harry & Nola Ball; his maternal great-grandparents, Thomas & Stella Helphenstine and Gano & Margaret Vice.


The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at the Mount Carmel Christian Church located at 55 Poplar Grove Road, Flemingsburg, KY 41041.  Bro. Lonnie Eden, Bro. Greg Tucker, and Bro. Travis Roberts will officiate.


Derrick will be laid to rest in Fleming County Cemetery.


Pallbearers include Darrin Pettit, Ronnie Harper, Carl Harper, Brandon Hammonds, Dale Davis, Danny Earlywine, and Jerry Carpenter.  Honorary pallbearers include Cayden Sebastion, Eli Pettit, and Jacob Roberts.


Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home located at 150 W. Water St., Flemingsburg, KY 41041.


All in attendance are strongly encouraged to wear face masks and to observe social distancing.
