George Alan Upchurch, 47, of Flemingsburg, passed away Friday, February 26, 2016 at University of Kentucky Hospital.
George was born in Benton, IL on May 9, 1968 to Geneva Smith.
George's profession and passion was thoroughbred horses and horse racing. George was a well-known trainer throughout the thoroughbred horse world, having worked the Kentucky circuit for many years traveling to Keeneland, Churchill Downs, Ellis Park and Turfway throughout the year. George was a charismatic man with a magnetic smile who made lasting friendships with many people throughout his life. He had a great love for all animals, and was the "dad" to many fur babies including Checkers, Little Man, Minnie, Mickey and Granyas along with 5 cats and 8 horses which held a special place in his heart. He loved Facebook where he was able to reconnect with old friends, and talk with people he was unable to see on a regular basis.
Survivors include his girlfriend and companion of 8 years Ramona Hazelrigg affectionately called "Pooh Bear"; his mother Geneva; brothers Eric Smith and Shannon Smith; large number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends from all over.
He was preceded in death by his brother Deon Houseworth; maternal grandparents Bill and Birdie Smith and paternal grandparents Ralph and Louise Upchurch.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home in Flemingsburg, KY.
Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. at the funeral home Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Race Track Chaplaincy of America (2365 Harrodsburg Road, Suite A-120 Lexington, KY 40504) or Lexington Humane Society (1600 Old Frankfort Pike Lexington, KY 40504).
