Obituary

Jackie Wayne Howell, 69, of Petersville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born in Maysville on August 10, 1956, Jackie was the son of the late Walter Lee Howell and the late Myrtle Louise Clark Howell.

To know Jackie was to know someone who truly embodied the word “strength”. He was a hardworking man who took great pride in the work he loved. Jackie spent his entire life farming, raising tobacco, and milking cows for 15 years. As a teenager he began logging and continued that work for many years. He enjoyed tending his garden and took great pleasure in teaching his children and grandchildren how to grow vegetables and fruits and preserve food through canning. Jackie also enjoyed hunting, working on equipment in his garage, and spending quiet evenings on the porch swing.

While Jackie was proud of the work he accomplished throughout his life, nothing was more important to him than his family. He worked tirelessly to ensure they were cared for and provided for, always putting their needs above his own. He leaves behind a legacy of love, guidance, and unwavering dedication that will be remembered by all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Jackie was a faithful member of the Petersville Church of Christ.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Loretta Elaine Miller Howell; his two daughters, Joann Sparks (Timmy Sparks) of Petersville and Rebecca Earles (Brent Earles) of Maysville; and two of his siblings, Arnold Howell and Connie Carpenter. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Amber Todd (Tyler Todd), Madison Smalley, Clayton Smalley, Skyler Muse, Malachi Muse, Connor Earles, Gracie Earles, Noah Sparks, and his great-grandson, Graham Todd.

In addition to his mother Myrtle and his father Walter, Jackie was preceded in death by an infant brother, Walter Howell Jr.; his brother, Ronald Joe Howell; and his two sisters, Roberta Prater and Judy Thurman McGinnis.

The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Petersville Church of Christ with Bro. Arnold Howell and Bro. Randy Carmichael officiating.

Jackie will be laid to rest in Esham Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Brent Earles, Timmy Sparks, Connor Earles, Noah Sparks, Skyler Muse, and Malachi Muse. Honorary Pallbearers include Tyler Todd, Clayton Smalley, Dalton King, Kevin Howell, Carter Manning and Kinley Manning.

Visitation will be 11 a.m., until the hour of service at 1 p.m., Thursday, at the church located at the intersection of KY 559 and KY 344, Vanceburg, KY 41179.

In place of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Jackie to the Petersville Church of Christ, (228 Bigden Hollow Road, Wallingford, Ky. 41093).
