Obituary

Joseph I. Greenwell IV, fondly known as Joey, 53, of Maysville, passed away Monday, April 14, 2025, from injuries sustained in a tragic accident.

Born in Maysville on April 29, 1971, Joey was the son of Nancy Porter Greenwell and the late Joseph I. Greenwell III.

Joey was a man who lived life to the fullest and dedicated himself to the community he cherished.

Joey retired in 2016 from the Maysville Fire Department as a Captain after 24 years of devoted service, exemplifying courage, leadership, and compassion every day. His commitment to protecting others was matched only by his passion for adventure: whether riding his UTV through scenic trails or hitting the open road on his Harley when the weather permitted, Joey embraced every opportunity to experience life with enthusiasm.

He began his mornings with friends at Hardee's, where he eagerly absorbed the stories and community happenings that brightened each day.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 23 years, Melissa Lee Greenwell; his daughter, Emily Jane Greenwell of Maysville, the light of his life; his mother, Nancy Porter Greenwell of Maysville; his brother, Kelly Greenwell (Emily) of Union, Kentucky,  his mother-in-law, Angie Lee of Flemingsburg, and  his sister-in-law,  Amber Corns (Rob) of Maysville. He is also survived by his niece and nephews. Joey also adored his fur baby, Bella, whose companionship he treasured.

Joey was preceded in death by his father, Joseph I. Greenwell III; his paternal grandparents, Joseph I. Greenwell II and Lillian Greenwell; his maternal grandmother, Jane Porter; and his father-in-law, Eddie Lee.

Joey's legacy of service, adventure, and love will forever remain in our hearts. His life reminds us to cherish every moment, to serve our community with passion, and to embrace the joy of living fully. He will be dearly missed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Saint Patrick Church, with Fr. Andrew Young, Fr. Augustine Aidoo, and Fr. Michael Black  as celebrants.
