IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry
Johnson
May 4, 1951 – November 28, 2024
Larry Vernon Johnson, 73, of Flemingsburg, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2024, at UK Medical Center in Lexington.
Born in Maysville on May 4, 1951, his father was the late Vernon Johnson and his mother was the late Helen Jackson Johnson.
A graduate of Morehead State University, Larry received his bachelor's in Art and History and his master's in Secondary Education. He was an art and history teacher at Simons Middle School. With 28 years of teaching in his career, he was a member of the Eastern Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and a past president of the Eastern Kentucky Education Association. During the fall and spring meets, he worked at Keeneland. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 112 Fleming and the Carlisle Rotary Club. He was a member of the Flemingsburg Christian Church and attended the Hillsboro Christian Church. He held several positions with the Republican Party of Kentucky and had been a past Chairman of the Fleming County Republican Party. He served on the Blue Licks Commemorative Commission, supported the Fleming County Covered Bridge Museum, and Morehead State University.
Larry's interest in local history and family genealogy added to his outgoing personality of one who was always on the go, participating in local events and festivals that took him far away from Fleming County in his world travels. He was an avid antiques collector and went to many sales and auctions. A dedicated Republican, his devotion extended even to his huge collection of elephants, the symbol of his political party. One of his proudest moments was being able to attend an inaugural event in Washington, D.C.
He is survived by his niece, Rhonda (Ashley) Black; his nephew, Matthew (Stacey) Klug; his great niece and nephews, Lee (Jennifer) Sutton, Ryan (Ashley) Reed, Ava Klug, Wyatt Klug, and Ryder Klug; his great, great nieces and nephews, Casen, Jayde, Mia, Jaxon, Everleigh, Ansley, Jase, Ella, and Emerson; along with many extended family members and friends.
In addition to his father Vernon and his mother Helen, Larry was preceded in death by sister, Linda Johnson Price.
The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the Hillsboro Christian Church with Bro. Randy Fritz and Bro. Greg Grimes officiating.
Larry will be laid to rest in Hillsboro Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Matt Klug, Lee Sutton, Ryan Reed, Andrew Mitchell, Todd Johnson, and Ashley Black. Honorary pallbearers include Bill Denton, Tommy Joe Sorrell, Jock and Sue Conley, Danny Lewis, Glenna Peterson, Martha and Tim Fritz, and Dana Watson.
