Obituary

Mary Jo Rawlings Cain, 88, of Flemingsburg, Ky., passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at her residence.

Born in Bath County, Ky., on August 5, 1934, she was the daughter of the late James Pressley Rawlings and the late Atha Snedegar Rawlings.

Mary Jo is survived by her four sons, Danny (Sue) Cain of Berea, Ky., Rick (Sharon) Cain of Hillsboro, Ky., Bobby (Karen) Cain of Kevil, Ky., and Timmy (Deborah) Cain of Salyersville, Ky.; and her daughter, Janet (Phil) Hogg of Georgetown, Ky. She is also survived by her two brothers, James (Tera) Rawlings of Owingsville, Ky., Larry (Marty) Rawlings of Port Ritchie, Fla.; her sister, Sue (Doug) Beck of Owingsville, Ky.; and her brother-in-law, Luther (Jeanie) Cain of Mortonsville, Ky.  Mary Jo was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; her son, Terry Cain of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

Like her late husband Ben, a retired United Methodist Minister, Mary Jo lived a life of service. She was an aide to special needs classes in Campton, Ky. She took an active part of Ben's ministry, serving in the churches through singing in the choir, participating in the many women's organizations, leading children's groups and going with Ben on 45 mission trips in Central America. Mary Jo also served her families and friends, always ready with special meals including wonderful desserts. She probably holds the record on ways to serve zucchini - a necessity to use the abundance from Ben's garden.

Mary Jo was most passionate about two things - sharing the love of Jesus and praying for her family and friends. She carefully chose ministries and organizations each month for which the church would contribute special offerings and make presentations about that group and how the church could extend the love of Jesus through that group. She daily prayed for her world, spending at least an hour each day going through her prayer list, beginning with her husband, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She would then proceed with her extended family, her church, the world and country leadership and then any with special, immediate needs. Even towards the end of her life, she would call to check on friends and families who were hurting or sick. One granddaughter called and told her that she so appreciated Mary Jo's daily prayers for her and knew those prayers helped her in so many ways and that she would miss the comfort those prayers brought.

Mary Jo bravely faced her cancer diagnosis and treatment. Her only concern was imposing on those caring for her. She always said she knew who was in control. At the end of her life, those with her said, "Fly away, sweet Mary Jo". A look of contentment and peace came to her face, she smiled and nodded and within minutes, flew away.

A service in memory of Mary Jo will be held at noon on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church in Flemingsburg, Ky., with Pastor Robbie Shrout officiating.
