Obituary

William Matthew "Matt" Spencer, 61, of Mt. Sterling, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2022, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mt. Sterling.


Born in Minot, North Dakota on October 17, 1961, he was the son of Carol Louise Sparks Spencer and the late William Gerald Spencer.


In addition to his mother, Matt is survived by his two children, William Tyler (Justice) Spencer and Lindsey Paige (Josh) Holbrook; his two grandchildren, Camryn Spencer Holbrook and William Vincent Spencer; his sister, Dayna Spencer (Mike) Seelig; along with his nephews, cousins and friends. He was a loving father, grandfather, son, and brother. He was a lifelong member of the Disciples of Christ Church.


Matt, Owner/President, built Spencer Landscape, Inc. from a residential mowing and landscape company to a multi-state residential and commercial business with multiple crews and sub-contractors. He was a licensed Mortgage Loan Officer and received numerous national awards: National Customer Service Award, National Spot Award with the highest outside business development. Most recently he was the Sales Director and a member of the management team for Cornett's Spirit of the Suwannee, Inc. in Live Oak, Florida, an 800-acre music park holding multi-day festivals and hosting over 600,000 visitors. He also was honored as a Kentucky Colonel.


He was raised on a horse farm in Fleming County, attended Fleming County High School and Morehead State University. Those who knew and loved him best remember him for his love of people, music, being an amazing cook, an avid golfer and enjoying a meal with those he loved. He always had a joke ready for you, could make you smile and was known for seeing those in need and extending a helping hand.


Arrangements for a private celebration of life will be made later by the family.
