Sadie Jewel Gardner Saunders Rice, 95, of Flemingsburg, formerly of Jeffersonville, Indiana, went home to be with her savior on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Sadie passed away peacefully with family by her side. She had recently been living with her niece, Kay Ginn and her husband Charles of Tollesboro, due to her declining health. Sadie moved back to Fleming County from Jeffersonville to help care for her ailing, aging mother, Addie Gardner. She worked at various jobs from being an apartment manager in Jeffersonville to being a caregiver and house cleaner while residing in Flemingsburg. Meeting many families she became friends with along the way.
Her pastimes included working crossword puzzle books and watching her favorite game shows, Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud. She enjoyed going to church with her friends, H.E. and Shirley Gray whom she thought a lot of at Wallingford Community Church where she was a member, singing and playing the piano. While residing with her niece and her husband, she attended Hickory Grove Church.
Born in Goddard on March 18, 1929, her father was the late Melvin H. Gardner and her mother was the late Addie Lois Caskey Gardner.
She soon met and married the love of her life as she fondly always thought of him on the 27th of September, 1943, Jessee Willard Saunders, and they were blessed with a son, Mike Saunders. Mike and his wife Pam reside in Sellersburg, Ind. She is also survived by her grandson, Brad Saunders and his wife Judy. She also leaves behind a great granddaughter, Lily Saunders of La Grange, Ky.
In addition to Jessee, her husband of 33 years, her mother Addie, and her father Melvin, Sadie was preceded in death by her five sisters, Mary Gertrude Hedges, Hazel Jackson, Wanda Joyce Faris, Nellie Ruth Conley, and Helen Conley.
She met and married Estil Rice of Fleming County until his death. They married April 16, 1998. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Sharon Rice.
She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, extended family members and special friends.
The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., Friday, January 17, 2025, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home, with Bro. Ronnie Conley, Bro. Randall Jackson, and Bro. David Hickerson officiating.
Sadie will be laid to rest in rest in Big Run Cemetery by her beloved Jessee Willard Saunders who died April 20, 1976.
Sadie will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Pallbearers include H.E. Gray, Brian Marshall, Dylan Marshall. Shane Jackson, Travis Jackson, and Jim Faris. Honorary pallbearers include John Little, Charles Ginn, Danny Jackson, Evan Conley, and Stacy Conley.
Visitation will be from 12 noon., until the hour of service at 1 p.m., Friday, at Boone-Nickell located at 150 West Water Street, Flemingsburg, Ky. 41041.
