Samuel Ray "Sam" Prather, 80, of Flemingsburg, departed this life on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at UK Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington, Kentucky from injuries he sustained in a vehicle accident.
Sam was the eldest son of the late Robert Marion Prather and the late Wilma Ryan Prather Jones.
Sam will be long remembered for his generosity, his good humor, and his larger than life spirit and laughter. He graduated from Fleming County High School and attended Central State University, Kentucky State University, and Morehead State University. He was retired from Dayton Power and Light (DP&L).
He leaves behind his two sons, Samuel "Ray" Prather and Shawn Anthony Prather, both of Flemingsburg; his two grandsons, Christian Rashawn Prather and Landen Kade Prather; four of his siblings, James Carl Prather, Linda Prather Talbert, Eleanor Smothers, and Tassa J. Wigginton; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members; and a niece who was like a daughter to him, LeAhna T. Floyd and husband Marcus.
In addition to his mother Wilma and his father Robert, Sam was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Marion "Jolly" Prather, Jr.
The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Flemingsburg First United Methodist Church.
Sam will be laid to rest in rest in Fleming County Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Ray Prather, Landen Prather, Christian Prather, Justin Prather, Marcus Lofton, Marcus Floyd, Trey Dudley, Jarue Mark, Charles Dudley, Chan Graham, Ashley Graham, and Josh Graham. Honorary pallbearers include Richie Platt, Greg Dudley, James Smothers, Michelle Graham, Don Latham, Charles Talbert, Eugene Rice, Oliver "Big O" Williams, and Jesse J. Mark.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m., on Friday, November 7, with Masonic Rites at 6 p.m. Additional visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the hour of service at 1 p.m., Saturday, at the church located at 117 West Main Street, Flemingsburg, Ky. 41041.
