Michael Mineer Obituary

Michael Layne Mineer, age 55, of Bear Creek, North Carolina, ascended the physical realm for his heavenly home on Monday, May 8, 2023.

Michael was born in Fleming County on January 29, 1968, to the late William Brooks Mineer and the late Janice Emmons Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lowell Lee “Tubby” and Theresa Emmons, William and Edith Mineer; one aunt, Wilma Havens; three uncles, Jerry Emmons, L.L. “Double L” Emmons, and John Havens; and one stepsister, Trish Carpenter.

Left to cherish all that he is are his partner-in-love and son, Jamelle Emerson and Jagger Emerson of Bear Creek, N.C.  He also leaves behind his sister, Jennifer Rowe (Michael) of Taylor Mill, Ky.; his stepmother, Freda Mineer of Flemingsburg,  his stepdad, Danny Carpenter (Karen) of Flemingsburg; his three stepsisters, Kristie Catching-Bellew (Austin) of Maysville, Gina Catching-Leet (Mike) of Maysville, and Becky McGinnis (Jamie) of Flemingsburg. Also surviving Michael are special uncles, Dale Emmons (Alison) and Elgin (Mary) Emmons; and special aunts, Tammy Emmons and Brenda Havens.  Left to cherish his memory will be many other beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and close friends from both Kentucky and North Carolina.

Michael was a 1986 graduate of Fleming County High School, and was a United States Army veteran.  After leaving Fleming County and the military, Michael found his home in Bear Creek, North Carolina. For the past 19 years, he served as an officer for the Chapel Hill Police Department in Chapel Hill, N.C., with plans to retire this August.

For those who knew Michael, he was proud to wear, and flaunt UK blue, especially in North Carolina.  But, even more, family was very important to him, and his partner and son were his world. He was the happiest the last several years, and found his true calling in being Jagger’s Dad and biggest supporter. He found passion in volunteering and mentoring many kids through the Rising Pros Training AAU basketball program, and was an active volunteer within the community, always willing to help others.

A memorial service will begin at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 20, 2023, at The Flemingsburg Nazarene Church with Pastor Michael Rowe presiding.

Michael will be laid to rest in Fleming County Cemetery with full military honors.
