Wanda Rawlings Maxey, 95, of Flemingsburg, Ky., passed away Thursday, July 6, 2023, at the Hospice Care Center in Maysville, Ky.
Born in Ringo’s Mills, Ky. on July 23, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert Rawlings and the late Ella Jackson Rawlings.
Mrs. Maxey started teaching in the one room McGregor Schoolhouse. She also taught at Hillsboro Elementary before becoming a Fleming County Teacher Supervisor and Head Start Supervisor. Mrs. Maxey also served as the Treasurer of the Ringo’s Mills Christian Church; she was a member of the Fleming County Hospital Board, and a patron of Fleming County Library. She continued supporting education through the Wanda Rawlings Maxey Scholarship Fund at Morehead State University.
Mrs. Maxey is survived by a great nephew, Harold Sorrell and his wife, Kathy.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Maxey was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Fred Hinton Maxey; her two brothers, Suddith Gilbert Rawlings and Preston Rawlings; and her two sisters, Vennetta Opal Rawlings Sorrell and Amanda Rawlings.
The graveside service will begin at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Hillsboro Cemetery with Dr. Rick Hackney officiating.
Pallbearers include Ricky Smoot, Rick Netherly, Leroy Hodges, JT Rawlings, Ernie Robinson, and Darrin Eldridge. Honorary pallbearers include Pat Fearin and Louise Christman.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Boone-Nickell located at 150 West Water Street, Flemingsburg, Ky. 41041.
